TAMPICO, 50,  SENT UP THE RIVER FOR 30 YEARS FOR CHILD PORNOGRAPHY.  TAMPICO, A FORMER EMPLOYEE OF THE LAWRENCE LIVERMORE NATIONAL LABORATORY, WORKED ON TOP SECRET LASER PROJECTS SUCH AS STAR WARS.

On Monday (2/14/00) a federal judge in Texas sentenced Jonathan Michael Tampico, a former high-level laser scientist at Lawrence Livermore Laboratory, to 30 years in federal prison for using the Internet to procure and distribute child pornography in Texas.

Tampico still faces charges in Alameda County regarding his pornography collection found in his former Fremont home and his storage locker.  It is the largest collection of child pornography ever discovered in Northern California.

Tampico was convicted in 1990 of molesting a 10-year-old Livermore boy.  Former Alameda Deputy D.A. Kenneth Burr (promoted in 1999 to Alameda Superior Court Judge, in the Family Law Department) arranged for an easy plea bargain for Tampico, who served only two years for molesting the Livermore boy.  Tampico pled to only one count--Count 9.  Click here to see the abstract of judgment.  It appears Mr. Burr dropped the other ten counts.  (Mr. Burr also prosecuted the so-called murderer of Bib Lee of Berkeley.  After the conviction of a UC student was obtained by the use of  fantasy confessions, a serial rapist/killer subsequently imprisoned in Washington State, was connected to the murder.  Burr refused to investigate this connection.)

When released from prison in 1992, Tampico tried to move to Washington state, but was run out of town.  Tampico then moved back to Fremont.

In September 1995, Tampico was arrested and jailed in Fremont on parole violations.  But one day before Fremont police served a search warrant regarding child pornography found in Tampico's Warm Springs storage locker, Tampico was released by his jailers.

And what was the in Tampico's locker?  Police found "thousands and thousands and thousands" of photographs, some dating back to the 1950s,  videotapes and computer- generated material.  The pictures depicted children - some as young as 3 - engaging in sex acts with each other and with adults.  Most of the adults in the pictures wore masks or hid their faces. Police said there were pictures of 100,000 different child victims from around the world in Tampico's locker.

Because of the so-called "mistake", Tampico fled Fremont, before the police seized his collection, and went to Thailand.  Tampico is a member of the North American Man-Boy Love Association, which advocates legalizing sex between adults and children.  In the 1980's,  Tampico ran a Thai "orphanage" catering to pedophiles world-wide.

In 1997, Tampico was captured in College Station Texas, and arrested on an Alameda County warrant for possession of child pornography found in his Warm Springs locker.  However, through a clerical error, which occurred in Alameda County,  he was mistakenly released from jail.  Tampico fled again.  In July 1998 after America's Most Wanted featured Tampico, he was found at his College Station home and arrested.

Tampico currently faces pornography charges in Alameda County.  Given that Tampico can't be released from prison until he is age 80 because of the Texas federal conviction, Alameda County's case against Tampico seems moot, late and futile.  It took a federal court in Texas to achieve what Thomas Orloff, Alameda County D.A. could not achieve--a capture, an arrest and a conviction.  In the meantime Tampico ran free and harmed children for six years because of  the Alameda County District Attorney's "mistakes" and policy of lenient plea bargaining for local pedophiles.

Perhaps, during the Alameda County trial of Tampico, the issue of  the identities of  the specific children portrayed in Tampico's pornography collection, will be explored?  Perhaps the true identities of the masked men shown in the pictures will be revealed?
