MIDSI'S DAD TALKS ABOUT WILD DAY IN COURT AND ABOUT HIS DAUGHTER.
By Rachel Raskin-Zrihen, © 2000 Vallejo Times-Herald staff writer 10/18/00
Bearing facial cuts as evidence of his courtroom outburst and subsequent scuffle with bailiffs, Juan Carlos Sanchez said Thursday he doesn't recall what happened when he tried to get his hands on the man accused of attacking his daughter.
"It was weird. I was reading in another paper some things about it, and the investigator was talking about some details, and I was looking at that guy's face smiling, and I guess I just went crazy," Sanchez said.
"I remember I got a big headache, and I stood up so I could get out, and the next thing I knew I was handcuffed, already. I don't understand it myself."
Sanchez told the Times-Herald that his outburst Wednesday was the culmination of more than two months of agony since his 8-year-old daughter Midsi escaped her abductor and became a national heroine. He said that she has become withdrawn, unwilling to open up even to a therapist, and it has greatly affected his whole family.
Though Midsi's been back to school, and the family is trying to maintain as normal a life as possible, family members have noticed a change in her since her return.
"She's different," Sanchez said. "She's more sensitive, and she cries over little things. And she gets angry over little things. It's not like it was before. She's got something inside she wants to get out."
As for Wednesday's outburst, Sanchez said, "I wasn't thinking about trying to get at him until I was sitting right next to him and he was smiling and they were describing that stuff and it just got to me."
Bailiffs wrestled a distraught Sanchez to the ground Wednesday after he tried unsuccessfully to reach accused kidnapper Curtis Dean Anderson by leaping over the court railing as a Vallejo police detective began testifying about the alleged attack on Midsi. The attempt came as much of a surprise to Sanchez as it did to everyone else in the courtroom, he recalled.
"I've never been in that situation before," Sanchez said. "I wasn't thinking anything, really. I just wanted to get to him. I just snapped. Just by hearing what that investigator was saying he did to my daughter. I got so much pain and anger in me. I'm working hard at keeping it under control."
Although handcuffed and removed from the courtroom, Sanchez was not formally arrested and there was little likelihood any charges will be brought against him. He said the bailiffs even apologized for having to remove him from the courtroom.
Anderson is accused of abducting Midsi as she walked home from Highland Elementary School on Aug. 10, and holding her for two days until she managed to escape. Prosecutors say that during that time she was repeatedly assaulted until her escape.
Sanchez said his pain and his anger is getting worse with time, even though he and his family are receiving counseling. Despite her return to her family, life has not been the same for the Sanchez family since Midsi was kidnapped.
"My little daughter is suffering. My wife is suffering. My whole family is suffering from this. I guess it was too much for me," he said. Sanchez said he learned many of the details of his daughter's ordeal for the first time from the press and in court.
"I haven't talked with my daughter about what happened yet," he said. "What ever she's comfortable with, we'll try to talk with her about. But right now, only Midsi and the police know what really happened."
Midsi's mother, Susanna Velasco, is similarly in the dark about most of the details of the 48 or so hours the third-grader spent in captivity.
"I know some details from what the doctors said after they examined her," she said, " but Midsi hasn't wanted to talk to anybody about it. Not us, not her therapist."
Unlike Sanchez, Velasco is not shocked by the details that have been emerging about her daughter's ordeal.
"I was angry but not surprised about any of this stuff," she said. "I knew from the moment he first took her that whoever had her wasn't going to be taking her to McDonalds."
Sanchez hopes that with time and counseling, he and his family will be able to find some peace of mind. He is aware, though, that it's going to take a long time and a lot of work.
"It feels like my life is going up and down so much," he said. "It's just too much for me, you know? My wife is having some problems. She knows Midsi was (assaulted), and she has her own feelings about that, and I have my own feelings on that. It makes me feel like I failed her. I've always been around for her, and that time I wasn't.
"He stole her innocence. It's hard. It's amazing how much damage can be done in 48 hours. That's a long time to be with someone like that. They take all your dreams away, and your pride. Especially in our culture --when you get ready to get married, you're supposed to come to the marriage to give that person everything. We value that. But we'll learn to live with it. And we'll be on her side all the way. It's not her fault," Sanchez said.
Sanchez is grateful for the support he's received from family and friends and even from complete strangers.
"I know the community's full of good people, and I know they're for us, and we thank them. But there is so much pain I got. To see my daughter isn't 100 percent OK. That she's been hurt. That really hurts me a lot. She's been found, and I thank God for that, but we see how she is now --one day she's normal and one day she's different, and it's really painful."
Sanchez hopes to be allowed back into the courtroom when hearings resume in November.
"They're going to call me and tell me what it's going to take to get back into court. I'll have to apologize to the court, and I'll do that," Sanchez said. "I've already apologized to the police. I didn't mean to do anything. It just happened. I'll do whatever it takes. They can put me way in the back. I don't care. I have to be there, especially if they put my daughter on the stand, and they say they might do that.
"I know a lot of terrible stuff is going to come out in court, but I want to hear them. We have a long way to go with my daughter, and I need to know so we can be understanding. That's why I want to know the details --so I can help her. So she can have a normal life."
As a father, Sanchez knows he has an uphill battle in trying to explain to a young child why and how someone like her attacker exists.
"People who can do stuff like that are not normal -- not human. She was hurt by a man, and I have to show her all men are not like that," Sanchez said.
But to learn the details of his daughter's ordeal, and to be there as moral support for his family are not the only reasons Sanchez hopes to be permitted back into court. He also wants to be there to see justice done.
"I want to see the day I know he's going away for good. I don't think life's enough for him. But if he got life I'll be satisfied. I won't be happy, though. As a parent, I want more than that."
In a jailhouse interview published October 18, 2000, Anderson told the Contra Costa Times he saw nothing wrong with adults having sex with children.
"I'm different,'' he told the paper. "I do what I want, when I want, how I want.''
On October 18, 2000, the father of the victim of Curtis Dean Anderson jumped over the rail in the courtroom, and tried to attack Anderson, as a police officer testified at a preliminary hearing about how Anderson dressed up the girl with make-up, plied her with alcohol and raped her repeatedly. (Click to story below.) The father was taken away in handcuffs then released. The mother of the victim allegedly flung her purse at Anderson. He ducked and the purse hit the bailiff. The bailiff insisted the flying purse was just an accident.
Another girl, seven-year old Xiana Fairchild, is still missing after having disappeared in December 1999 in Vallejo. Antoinette Robinson, Xiana's mother, said that a mutual friend introduced her to Anderson, a man who walked with a conspicuous limp and who neighborhood children called "Dean" or "Cabman". Children reported that Anderson used his cab to pick up children and drive them to school, a report the Vallejo police later disputed. Robinson and her boyfriend Turnbough, who is a convicted child abuser, took Anderson to their studio apartment on Georgia Street in Vallejo in November or early December 1999. Anderson met Xiana at her mother's apartment. Robinson stated, "He didn't seem to take any particular notice of Xiana. His interest wasn't in her." Robinson's boyfriend helped Anderson repair his Chevrolet Suburban. On December 18, 1999, Anderson appeared at the Xiana volunteer center to offer to help search for Xiana. There are reports that Anderson also appeared at the volunteer center to help search for the Vallejo girl.
Robinson, Turnbough and Anderson all drove cabs in Vallejo. Despite his severe limp, which now causes him to use a wheelchair for court appearances, Anderson worked for Vallejo City Taxi Cab for a few days in late November or early December, reported owner Paul Sanso. Turnbough and Robinson worked for Vallejo City Cab and other companies.
On April 24, 1992, Anderson was convicted and then imprisoned in San Quentin for assaulting and falsely imprisoning an acquaintance's wife, Dina Rae Stansbury, whom Anderson met through his brother. Anderson asked Stansbury for a ride to work in Fairfield. He asked Stansbury to take him to his mother's house, where he held her and gunpoint, demanded her credit cards and forced her to drive him to Oregon. Stansbury escaped at Grants Pass, when she bolted from him while requesting to use a restroom. Stansbury flagged down a passerby.
Anderson was released from San Quentin on parole in August 1995 after serving 42 months of an 80 month sentence for kidnapping Stansbury. Upon release from prison, he was sent to live Santa Clara County because the victim in Solan0 County requested he not be released into Solano County where she lived because she feared for her life. In September 1997, while out on state parole, Anderson allegedly exposed himself to a minor child of a girlfriend in Santa Clara County, said Deborah Sdar, deputy regional parole administrator for the California Department of Corrections. For this offense, Anderson was sent back to state prison for one year, the maximum sentence allowed for a parole violation. Anderson was not registered as a sex offender.
Why? When a felony convict on parole commits a new criminal offense, the District Attorney makes a decision regarding which of two procedures he will pursue: 1) revoke parole and send the convict back to prison for a maximum of one year, or 2) begin a new criminal case against the parolee. Prosecutors in Santa Clara County decided that a new criminal case which if it resulted in a conviction would cause Anderson to be registered as a sex offender was not the procedure to pursue. Instead, Santa Clara prosecutors chose to allow revocation of parole, without filing new charges, knowing that revocation of parole regarding a sex offense does not result in registration as a sex offender. A parole revocation hearing is conducted by an agent of the parole board, is usually brief and requires a minimum presentation of evidence. In short, it's simple and not time-consuming and the District Attorney need not work. It is also noteworthy that the District Attorney could have filed a three strikes case against Anderson (with a minimum 25 years to life sentence) based upon the new offense of indecent exposure before a minor coupled with his prior serious felony convictions. The D.A. did not chose that option.
In April 1999, Anderson was sent back to prison on another parole revocation for having allegedly abducting a woman from a bar in Santa Clara County. It is amazing that Anderson served approximately one month for that kidnapping offense and was ordered free from prison on May 17, 1999.
On November 21, 1999, Anderson's parole term was completed.
On December 9, 1999, Xiana Fairchild was kidnapped while on the way to school in Vallejo.
In August 2000, the Vallejo girl, who was kidnapped and raped by Anderson, escaped by stealing his keys from the ignition, unlocking her chains and flagging down a passing truck driver. The intelligence and courage of this child in this situation is staggering.
At no time, prior to the Vallejo girl's escape was Anderson considered a suspect in the kidnapping of the Vallejo girl or of Xiana Fairchild, despite the heavy involvement of the FBI and the grand jury convened in Sacramento to investigate the Xiana Fairchild case.
Why? A check of recent parolees who live or work in the area of a kidnap and who visit the home of a victim, and who have a history of kidnap and sexual abuse of minors is a standard police procedure.
Richard Allen Davis was also on parole at the time he abducted Polly Klaas. Davis had kidnapped several women at knifepoint, yet at no time was Davis interviewed prior to his arrest which occurred after items of Polly Klaas' clothing were found at Pythian Road. When these items were "discovered", the Sonoma deputy sheriffs were forced to reveal they had detained Davis within an hour or two after the kidnap and let him go.
What's wrong with this picture? It looks like the parole system and the use of parole revocation in sex offender cases, is a breeding ground for child kidnappers and abusers in California. The District Attorneys of Solano and Santa Clara County let Anderson walk free too many times. NewsMakingNews asks who is utilizing these parolees to abduct children?
Curtis Dean Anderson Held To Answer Kidnap, Molest Charges
(10-18) VALLEJO -- The father of an eight-year-old girl who in August escaped a kidnapper lunged at her alleged abductor during a court hearing Wednesday.
The girl's father hopped a short partition in Solano County Superior Court and bore toward Curtis Dean Anderson, who was sitting in a wheelchair near his defense attorney. The father was restrained by bailiffs and removed from the courtroom, said Donna Stashyn, a Solano County deputy district attorney.
He sprang up after a Vallejo officer took the stand and began to tell the court that Anderson molested the girl while she was shackled for 48 hours in his Oldsmobile Firenza, Stashyn said.
The commotion prompted a 10-minute recess. After returning, Judge Allen Carter ruled that Anderson should be arraigned Nov. 2 on 11 charges of kidnapping and sexual molestation. Anderson's lawyer has said he will plead innocent.
Court documents allege that Anderson forced the girl to wear makeup and drink beer and wine after abducting her Aug. 10. The girl escaped from her kidnapper's car in Santa Clara on Aug. 12 by unlocking her shackles and flagging down a passing truck.
In a jailhouse interview published Wednesday, Anderson told the Contra Costa Times he saw nothing wrong with adults having sex with children.
``I'm different,'' he told the paper. ``I do what I want, when I want, how I want.''

AMANDA NIKKI CAMPBELL child, Fairfield, Solano County, Dec. 27, 1991.
HANG YOUR HEAD IN SHAME CITY OF FAIRFIELD-- IF SUSPECTS IN CHILD KIDNAP CASES ARE PAID OFF, SOLANO COUNTY IS A SAFE HAVEN FOR PEDOPHILES! On May 2, 1997, the City of Fairfield, (located in Solano County) paid Timothy Bindner $90,000 to settle his lawsuit against the Fairfield police for having executed a search warrant at his Oakland home looking for evidence pertaining to Nikki Campbell and Amber Swartz Garcia. Bindner's status was classified as a suspect in these and several other cases at the time of the payment. Attorneys for Binder were Gary Lepper and Matthew Harrington, his partner, who also defended the Emeryville child molesters at the Emery Unified School District. None of these molesters were prosecuted either and they are walking around free and some of them are teaching school children, and others are government officials and owners of corporations in Alameda County.
A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO WANTS TO PROTECT CHILDREN IN NORTHERN CALIFORNIA "Stalemate" by John Philpin, A Bantam Book, 1997. This superb book exposes the child porn/kidnap/murder ring operating in Alameda, Solano and Contra Costa Counties and tells the tale of Timothy Bindner and the FBI's failures too solve too many cases, which has resulted in death after death after death!

The investigators do not want you to know how far men like Oswald, Sirhan, Ray, Bremer, Hinckley, Chapman travel. Where are all of those Gore/Lieberman signs in Napa County? Or better, why are there NO Gore/Lieberman signs while several garage-sized Bush/Cheney posters obstruct the views of vineyards?
It's because of a "mole." The mole is a very persuasive individual -- ignore the fact that the mole's family is Republican. The mole has placed itself somewhat in charge of the "logistics" for the Napa County democrats.
The logistics in Napa County are so convoluted that nothing gets done.
Meanwhile, the mole makes a fortune likely trading off information from inside and right back to the sources of Republican strength. For this the mole gets to play footsies with the Republican Pete Wilson-appointed judges, and score big points professionally for subversion.
"Democrats of Napa County" maintains a headquarters at 1412 Second Street, Napa. Nothing exciting is taken outside the building to signal its location, and the building is drab, dull and unappointed. No computer, no fax machine -- and no signs. You can buy buttons, but your money goes to a PAC and money to the central committee are not accepted.
If you call information and ask for a number for the headquarters for the democrats, you get the number for this office: (707) 224-3546. There is a very nice greeting, but it gives "wrong" information. It gives the proper location, but it states the offices are only open from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. Wrong. When you wait around all day at the office, no one comes in until after work at 5:00 p.m. and the offices are staffed from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. When you arrive and chat, your are told "we are open only from 5:00 p.m. to maybe as late as 7:00 p.m."
The recorded message provides an e-mail: . E-mail a message. It goes to someone's computer, but not back to the headquarters. Who knows who receives the messages and what is ever done with them.
You are given a FAX line. Who knows where that goes -- not back into the office.
This is not the way offices have been run in the past, before the mole arrived.
The mole is more than a mole -- the mole is either totally dysfunctional or the subversive so clearly suspected. The mole has a notorious reputation in more remote parts of the county. How is it the mole was allowed to charm its way into Napa?
Their word is that Gore is saving all of the signs for the "swing states" so signs aren't coming out in California. WRONG! That isn't the case outside of Napa County. There are Gore/Lieberman signs in many other areas, though there are indeed several weeks plus to go to November 7th election day.
Oh, just in case you wonder more -- the mole worked for a law firm beholding to the family of the late Ca. Attorney General, Governor, and Supreme Court Justice Earl Warren -- talk about Republican. The mole has associations with members of the family of the late, corrupt, mobbed up Huey Long, a U.S. Senator from Louisiana who was "rubbed."
The mole needs to be exposed. No names need be parlayed -- but a good clean sweep in Napa ON AN EMERGENCY BASIS FROM LOYAL DEMOCRATS wouldn't hurt -- or at minimum, good adult supervision and careful attention to where the PAC monies are going.
