QUOTES OF THE DAY (3/23/00): "The Patriot system can defend only a particular point, such as a presidential palace, not an entire area."  "Asian Star Wars", Far Eastern Economic Review, June 6, 1996."

"Others claim that the Patriot was ineffective in stopping Iraqi Scuds (particularly in Israel) and is a perfect example of why BMD (Ballistic Missile Defense ) or "Star wars" as its detractors refer to it will not work."  Alexander Simon.

FOR OUR FANS WITH SPRING FEVER!

"Love resistless in fight, all yield at a glance of thine eye,
Love who pillowed all night on a maiden's cheek dost lie...
Over the upland folds thou roam'st, and the trackless sea,
Love, the gods captive holds.

Shall mortals not yield to thee?" Sophocles, Antigone 781

MASSIVE PATRIOT MISSILE FAILURES!  DOES AMERICA HAVE ANY BALLISTIC MISSILE DEFENSE SYSTEM?  THE PATRIOT MISSILE SHOOTS HOLES IN THE STAR WARS PORK BARREL OF FANTASY TECHNOLOGY!

The Associated Press reports (3/23/00):

NEW YORK (AP)--Hundreds of Patriot missiles in the Mideast and South Korea had to be quickly replaced by the Army after tests found potential flaws in the weapons system, The Wall Street Journal reported today.

``A significant number of failures were found'' during testing and the decision was made to replace all ``suspect missiles,'' said Lt. Gen. Paul Kern, a top acquisition officer for the Army.

The number of withdrawn missiles remains classified, but the missiles were pulled over the past 10 days from approximately 11 batteries protecting U.S. forces in South Korea, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia, the newspaper reported.

A typical battery has about 64 missiles, and unidentified officials told the Journal that the number pulled was certainly in the hundreds.

The part of the system that appears most vulnerable is a radio frequency downlink that allows the missile to communicate with radar guiding its flight, the Journal reported.

U.S. allies, which also rely on the Patriot system, have been informed of the problem. The issue is of particular concern to Israel, which, like the United States, tends to keep more of its Patriot launchers on full alert, the Journal said.

Kern said engineers were working on the problem, but he did not know how long it would take to find a solution. Dave Shea, a spokesman for Raytheon Co., the missile manufacturer, said the company is working with the Army to identify and resolve the problem.

SCIENTIOLOGY AS SPIRITUAL!    LETTER TO THE EDITOR FROM GARY NOVAK.

Dear NewsMakingNews:

You requested an opinion in opposition to the lambasting of Scientology's Battlefield Earth.

Even if all of the criticisms of Scientology are true, and they could be, there is a contribution to society that Scientology's L. Ron Hubbard did make.  He cracked the wall of materialism which denies all spiritual truth in the official realities of society.

Doing that might not seem so significant nowadays, as out-of-the-body and near-death experiences have gained some legitimacy.  But a few decades ago, it was unimaginable to me what a spiritual being might be.  Scientology clarified that subject.

Gary Novak (c) 2000  See Mr. Novak's web site "Science and Science Criticism" at: http://nov55.com  An excerpt:

"Biological weapons disinformation was generated in the dark cellars of government to gain support for an anti-terrorist campaign. Anthrax and botulism are not significant biological weapons. Journalists and bureaucrats run wild with their imaginations, because they do not understand the biology. This website describes the biology for a more realistic perspective."

QUOTES OF THE DAY (3/22/00): "Semper Fidelis."  Latin for "Always Faithful." Marine Corps motto and traditional greeting among Marines.

"For his role as Terl, the head of Psyclo security (and the film's main villain), John Travolta is wearing a 8-foot-tall rig that includes stilts, long claws, and a strangely shaped head (his wife, Kelly Preston, is also going to appear as an alien in the film).  Comment regarding John Tavolta's role in Battlefield Earth, by "Greg," critic for upcomingmovies.com.

Premise: "In the year 3000, 1000 years after an alien race called the Psyclos (represented in the film by Terl, played by Travolta) conquers Earth, killing 90% of humanity so that they may mine the planet of all valuable resources, a young man named Johnny Goodboy (Pepper) comes out of hiding in the mountains near Boulder, Colorado in search of other surviving human tribes in the hopes of someday overthrowing alien control."  Description of the plot of Battlefield Earth, (originally a book by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard) by upcomingmovies.com.

SEMPER FIDELIS OR NOT ALWAYS FIDELIS?  Serb Info News reports Marine Platoon deserts in Kosovo. True or false?

CODE SMASHER.  ENCRYPTION IS NOTHING TO NASA NOW.  ECHELON TRIUMPHS!

EKSTRABLADET of Denmark (3,22,00) reports NSA has been issued patent number  6.026.053 for a holographic memory computer:

"Regardless of their intentions, the memory technology they have patented can definitely be used to make exhaustive searches," says Peter Landrock to Ekstra Bladet. Exhaustive search is a code-breaking technique. It is based on instructing a computer to try every single code combination until it finds the right code, after which the user can read the text.

To perform the fastest possible exhaustive search on a encrypted text, a computer system needs an incredibly large storage capacity. To decipher a coded letter, an ordinary computer system would need from now to eternity and then some.

The NSA's latest invention is tailor-made to smash the code systems used around the world as protection against spies."

WILL WARNER BROTHERS BE FORCED TO HALT THE DISTRIBUTION OF JOHN TRAVOLTA'S NEW FILM, "BATTLEFIELD EARTH?" IS IT A SCIENTOLOGY MOVIE?

F.A.C.T.Net, which calls itself an anti-cult organization,  reports:

Just weeks before its scheduled opening, will Warner Brothers, Morgan Creek, and Franchise Pictures, be forced to halt the distribution of the new $80 million Travolta Film, Battlefield Earth? Perhaps, and surprisingly the reason will not be the horrible reviews. Neither will it be allegations of false advertising in the movie's trailer, which claims the film is based on one of the best selling science fiction books of all time. Neither will it be the publicity surrounding the involvement of the world's most dangerous cult, as revealed in a scathing Washington Post article [Nov 28, 1999],  or the fact that this cult may make a fortune from Battlefield Earth toys by Trendmaster. The reason Warner Brothers may be forced to halt distribution is a new allegation that the movie contains sophisticated subliminal messages designed to get you into the cult of Scientology.
